The Situation
By 2100, two third of Himalayan glaciers may disappear, due to global warming and pollution coming from Indo- Gangetic plain region ( Plains of Indus – Ganga rivers). Even if the world limits the temperature rise to 1.5C this century, at least one-third of the glaciers would melt. And across the world, glacier volumes are projected to decline up to 90 percent this century.
Important to note
Around 25% of the world’s population gets its water resources through Hindu Kush Himalayan Region glaciers, which spans over 2,000 miles of Asia. And increased pollution and the melting of the glaciers will lead to extreme weather events.
The Global Warming Situation: We Are heading towards
The report on climate change issued by the United Nations’ scientific panel found that, by 2040, the world would be warmer as much as 1.5 degrees Celsius above preindustrial levels, if greenhouse gas emissions continued at the current rate. The Himalayas could heat up by 4 degree Celsius by the end of the century, and we are heading towards severe natural disasters. (Source: BBC news)
